With the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings fast approaching I thought I'd post some shots from that area.

Wow!
Over a month since I've posted anything.
We can't have that! Because yesterday I had an evening flight. One of those experiences that makes all the struggle of learning to fly and passing ground exams worthwhile

Got up early this morning to play in the freshly fallen snow.
The snowcat is a little 'memorial' to Biggles the Tabby, who died a couple of year's back

For those who don't know, Guinness is the Irish version of Porter, a strong, dark beer that got its name from being the drink of choice of porters in the meat, fish and vegetable markets of London in the 18th Century. As it was boiled for a long time in preparation it was much safer to drink than the water in those days.
The "Guinness Storehouse" is Dublin's biggest visitor experience, one that I have always avoided visiting as I feared it would be a disappointing 'tourist trap'
Bad move! It is spectacular. The images here only capture a small flavour (pun intended) of the show which take the form of a huge beer glass seven floors high, topped with the glass 'head' you can see in the first picture - actually a vast bar with a 360 degree view of the city where you are issued with your free pint.
If you visit Dublin. DO NOT MISS IT!

No theme here, just some of the interesting, quirky or typical sights of Ireland's capital city. I set up to take the picture of the gigantic spike in O'Connel Street, pushed the button, glanced at the result and then moved on. It was only later that I found I'd committed the cardinal sin of not checking the whole picture, hence we seem to have the largest and clumsiest radio-controlled bus in the world . The items on 'retail display' were from a market down an alleyway selling such an enormous load of odd junk you can't imagine. I'm sure there were some bargains there, but at tleast they had had the humour to add some roots to the root cutter. The shoe? I don't know, but it looks intriguing, doesn't it? Bewlay's is the famous tea rooms. There are several about, and always worth the visit. The Irish love their cows, but they do now seem to be entering the 21st Century with petrol-driven versions

More Dublin
|

But life there isn't just pubs. There's a literary side too. James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, all those sort of people.
These shots are from the "Winding Stairs Bookshop and Tea Rooms"
Somehow B&W suited its timelessness best.

Dublin is a very friendly town. At the heart of the community are the bars or pubs. Many have resisted the urge to modernise too much, though even in the best of them the large screen television seems to be ubiquitous. But they have a charm all of their own. Here's just a sample.
